Homeowner TA: ADU Case Study Interview Questions

About this resource: The following questions can be used in interviewing an ADU owner to produce a case study. Add and edit questions as relevant to showcase local programs or goals. Open-ended questions that allow for storytelling tend to be more successful.

Introduction

  • Give a brief background on how stories will be used.
  • Is it okay if we record this conversation? It's only to get your quotes right.
  • We will send you what we write so you can approve it. Nothing gets printed without your approval.
  • [Confirm stipend and how it will get paid once project is complete, if applicable]

Questions

  • How long have you lived in the area? When did you move into your current home?
  • What do you like about living here?
  • What was your first inspiration to build an ADU?
  • What was the process of planning and building like?
    • Were there any surprises?
  • How did you find your designer? Contractor? Did you hire any other professionals?
  • Do you feel comfortable talking about the financial aspects of the ADU? If so, how much did it cost to build?
  • Describe your ADU to me. How many square feet is it? How many rooms or are there any features? (patio, utility room, office, studio or 1 bedroom)
  • How did you find your tenant?
  • How has it been adjusting to tenants on the property? What have been the benefits?
  • How has it felt to be able to help others with housing?
  • What is your favorite thing about your ADU?
    • Are there any special features you particularly like?
  • What would you tell someone else considering building an ADU?
  • Do you by chance have a basic floorplan you could share or take a photo of? Do you have any pictures of construction?
  • Is there anything else you’d like to share to help other people build an ADU?

Outro

  • Thank you so much for supporting this project.
  • We will send any follow up questions and a request for floorplan.
  • We will send draft text for review when it’s ready.
