Homeowner TA: ADU Case Study Interview Questions
About this resource: The following questions can be used in interviewing an ADU owner to produce a case study. Add and edit questions as relevant to showcase local programs or goals. Open-ended questions that allow for storytelling tend to be more successful.
Introduction
- Give a brief background on how stories will be used.

- How long have you lived in the area? When did you move into your current home?
- What do you like about living here?
- What was your first inspiration to build an ADU?
- What was the process of planning and building like?
- Were there any surprises?
- How did you find your designer? Contractor? Did you hire any other professionals?
- Do you feel comfortable talking about the financial aspects of the ADU? If so, how much did it cost to build?
- Describe your ADU to me. How many square feet is it? How many rooms or are there any features? (patio, utility room, office, studio or 1 bedroom)
- How did you find your tenant?
- How has it been adjusting to tenants on the property? What have been the benefits?
- How has it felt to be able to help others with housing?
- What is your favorite thing about your ADU?
- Are there any special features you particularly like?
- What would you tell someone else considering building an ADU?
- Do you by chance have a basic floorplan you could share or take a photo of? Do you have any pictures of construction?
- Is there anything else you’d like to share to help other people build an ADU?
