In the summer of 2019, the Department of Local Affairs launched the Renewable and Clean Energy Initiative with the goal of supporting the development and construction of renewable and clean energy infrastructure in all areas of the state. This also aligns with Gov. Jared Polis’ BOLD goal of moving the state towards 100% renewables by 2040.

The program began with a $12 million set-aside, and has been supported with two additional set-asides of $5 million utilizing available stimulus funding. To date, more than $22 million has been awarded throughout the state, supporting a wide range of projects from solar and micro-grids to hydroelectric to methane capture and reuse.

Regional managers continue to work with local governments to develop climate adaption and sustainability plans, focusing on renewable/clean energy, energy efficient options, and long-term community resiliency. These efforts are intended to help communities throughout the state meet energy efficiency and climate action goals while focusing on more efficient and cost effective energy sources and uses.  All while working towards supporting community decisions and goals that focus on a community’s resilience to changing climate conditions and impacts and stressors from manmade and natural disasters.

The Department of Local Affairs plans to continue this support for renewable and clean energy projects with additional set asides, to be announced in the near future. Contact your regional manager to discuss your community goals, challenges, and opportunities.
