2018 Planning for Hazards Webinar Series

As Colorado continues to grow, strategic land use planning will be essential to build community resilience. The 2018 webinar series focuses on how local communities can reduce their risk and vulnerability by integrating hazard risk reduction strategies into land use planning. The webinars provide detailed, Colorado-specific tools, resources and information about how to assess a community's risk level to hazards and how to implement numerous land use planning tools and strategies for reducing a community's risk. Each webinar explores successful implementation of the land use planning tools and strategies described in the Planning for Hazards: Land Use Solutions for Colorado Guide. The 2018 webinar series to help communities with hazard mitigation and planning are listed below.

Reducing Colorado Communities' Risk to Geologic and Soil Hazards

April 18, 2018: 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Geologic hazards impact many Colorado communities, but are you planning for this type of hazard? How do you assess and mitigate your community’s risk to hazards like landslides, rock falls, and debris flows? What land use tools and resources are available to planners looking to take action? This webinar provides planners the opportunity to learn about geologic and soil hazard mitigation in Colorado, services available for local planners, and the Colorado Geological Survey’s Land Use Review Program and process. Participants also hear from a local government case study about efforts to plan for geologic risk, including, the development and adoption of a recent landslide ordinance. Participants also hear from the city of Colorado Springs about their efforts to plan for geological risk, including the development and adoption of their recent land slide ordinance. Communicating Community Risk and Resilience

July 12, 2018:12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Cultivating a community willingness and motivation to reduce risk and build resilience means building a strong community engagement strategy. This webinar focuses on “making the case” for hazard mitigation and pre-disaster preparedness through land use planning. Learn about national, regional and local efforts that change the way communities understand and think about disaster risks, with the specific goal of helping communities take actions to increase their resilience to natural disasters. This webinar also features several Colorado case studies. View the Communicating Community Risk and Resilience webinar.

Land Acquisition Strategies for Building Flood Resilience

December 13, 2018: 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
One effective approach to mitigating risk in high hazard areas is for a local government or land trust to acquire it. This webinar focuses on land acquisition as an important hazard mitigation tool to protect communities from the impacts of floods and other hazards and achieve multiple community goals. Join us to learn how several Colorado communities have used land acquisition and related tools to create meaningful flood hazard avoidance and to explore funding opportunities.
