Support Source Assessment

Where is the support?

Once you have taken inventory of the current programs and services operating in or connected to your Main Street, the next step is to identify the sources of support for these services. In some cases, funding may come from federal, state, or local government agencies. In other cases, funding may come from private sources, such as community-based organizations or private foundations. But do not forget volunteers and other in-kind support. Your sources of support should be like a retirement plan — as diverse and long standing as possible.

Listed are some possible sources of support. Make a list of the support your Main Street has and note the funding amount and the funding type (In-Kind, Volunteer, Restricted, et al):

  • Community-based organizations and nonprofits (YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs, faith-based, Rotary, Kiwanis, etc.)
  • Universities and colleges (work-study or service-learning students, professional development training)
  • Federal funds (transportation funds through CDOT, VISTA, AmeriCorps)
  • State funds (funds from state departments such as DOLA, OEDIT, etc.)
  • Municipal or county funds (from the town board or city council, county incentives)
  • Private foundations (local, state, or national foundations)
  • Private businesses
  • Participation fees
  • Volunteers
  • Other
